In the Offing is a selection of miniature and large-scale paintings and drawings by Albuquerque-based artist Cedra Wood. The exhibition highlights Wood's responses to fascinating daily changes in our physical and psychological environments.
By contrasting the colors and textures of specific landscapes and curious characters, she depicts meditations on mortality, symbols of retreat and protection, and the desire to play a role in the mysterious moments of life.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Cedra Wood’s paintings and drawings are the result of her ongoing investigations into human/ecological relationships. Engaging with ideas of belonging and survival, Wood interweaves human characters and natural environments, sometimes mimicking the tactics of other, more well-adapted creatures in order to create imagery that is by turns comical, wistful, discomfiting, and surreal, investing the landscape with the significance of allegory. Wood received her BA from Austin College, and her MFA from the University of New Mexico. A 2012-2014 Research Fellow at the Nevada Museum of Art’s Center for Art + Environment, and a founding member of the Ghost Town Arts Collective, where she continues to serve on the board, Wood is represented in public and private collections in the US, Europe, and Australia, and currently lives and works in Albuquerque.
